Evaluation of Dairy Wastewater Treatment Systems Using Carbon Footprint Analysis

چکیده
Modernisation of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) should be carried out, taking into account its impact on global warming, e.g., through carbon footprint (CF) analysis. An important sector in Poland is the dairy industry. In WWTPs, aerobic sewage sludge stabilisation applied thus far being replaced by anaerobic process. This change positive due to possibility energy production, but it unclear how affects greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. The aim research was perform CF analysis for two scenarios WWTP operation. based real operating data current system (current scenario) project modernisation (alternative scenario). scenario consists mechanical dissolved air flotation (DAF) treatment, biological sequence batch reactors (SBRs), final farmland usage. alternative assumes replacing with a combined heat power (CHP) system. calculations were empirical models, different emission input parameters, expressed CO2 equivalents (CO2e). total 22 kg CO2e PE?1 year?1, while 45 year?1. largest share belongs emissions from WWTPs use, alternative, there addition biogas use.

Treatment of Dairy Wastewater Using Pilot Scale Tricking Filter
A pilot scale trickling filter and secondary sedimentation are used to evaluate the feasibility of this process for the treatment of raw dairy waste. The BOD in the raw waste of 252 to 1200 mg/l is reduced 50-73% by a single stage and a further 17-55% by sedimentation tank. Treatment efficiencies are determined at various waste strengths and influent flow rates. With a loading rate of 5-12 kg B...
متن کاملEstimation of the Carbon Footprint in Dairy Sheep Farm
By 2050, the earth’s population is expected to be more than 9 billion. The need for secure food and water supply will force agriculture to increase production. The major greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the livestock sector are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) throughout the production process. These gases are the key contributor to an in...
متن کاملDairy Wastewater Treatment using Three-Stage Rotating Biological Contactor (NRBC)
Dairy wastewater is enriched in organic matter (about 45-72 g/l, COD) and also contains biodegradable carbohydrates. A three-stage system, NRBC was fabricated as a bench scale unit for lab experiments, to remove organic carbon from the whey. The fabricated NRBC had several advantages, such as quick start-up, high biomass concentration and was additionally able to handle high organic loading rat...
متن کاملCarbon Footprint Analyses of Mainstream Wastewater Treatment Technologies under Different Sludge Treatment Scenarios in China
With rapid urbanization and infrastructure investment, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Chinese cities are putting increased pressure on energy consumption and exacerbating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A carbon footprint is provided as a tool to quantify the life cycle GHG emissions and identify opportunities to reduce climate change impacts. This study examined three mainstream wastew...
